Orofacial therapy
Orofacial therapy

With orofacial therapy, we treat complaints in the face, head, and mouth. Problems in this area can cause significant limitations in daily life. Our orofacial therapist assesses these issues, develops a treatment plan, and coaches you to improve functioning.

Orofacial complaints

Orofacial complaints include headaches, pain while eating, talking, laughing, or facial pain. Dizziness or surgeries in the head-neck area can also lead to functional problems. The orofacial therapist can provide treatment and coaching for:

• Jaw problems

 • Facial pain and facial paralysis

 • Balance rehabilitation • Headaches

 • Clenching and grinding

 • Tinnitus

 • Complaints after head-neck surgery and oncology

 • Neck problems

Orofacial therapy, our approach

Orofacial therapy begins with a comprehensive one-hour intake. An analysis is made of your functional problem, your desires, and goals. Through a thorough examination, all important factors are identified. Every aspect of your complaints is then addressed. A treatment plan is developed in consultation with you and potentially other specialists.

Orofacial therapy may include:
• Advice and coaching
• Mobilization techniques
• Exercise therapy
• Stability training
• Trigger point treatment and dry needling
• Relaxation exercises and awareness.
• Scar treatment
• Dizziness treatment.

Certified orofacial therapist

The orofacial therapist – sometimes also referred to as a jaw physiotherapist – is a physiotherapist who is extensively trained in posture and movement problems in the head-neck-jaw area. Our orofacial therapist is affiliated with the Dutch Association for Orofacial Physiotherapy (NVOF). The NVOF ensures quality, including by setting requirements for continuing education, maintaining a complaints procedure, and maintaining a register of recognized orofacial therapists. Collaboration with specialists Our orofacial therapist collaborates with the general practitioner, dentist, speech therapist, orthodontist, or medical specialist, such as an ENT specialist, maxillofacial surgeon, gnathologist, or neurologist.
