Kinesio Taping is a treatment method in which muscle activity assists in the recovery of injuries. Muscles play a role in supplying blood and removing waste products from the body.
Elastic Tapes
Kinesio Taping uses elastic tapes that support muscles without restricting them. The normal muscle activity improves tissue circulation, promoting recovery.
Origin at the Olympic Games
Through extensive research and clinical studies, Dr. Kenzo Kase developed a technique called Kinesio Taping in Japan in 1973. He gained international recognition during the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Nowadays, everyone is familiar with the colored strips of tape on athletes’ skin.
Freedom of Movement
Regular sports tape aims to limit the range of motion of a muscle or joint. The sports tape is applied under pressure, which has negative effects on blood flow and lymphatic drainage, unnecessarily prolonging injury recovery. Kinesio Taping uses elastic tape that supports tissues and joints in their functioning. Tissue circulation and freedom of movement remain intact. Kinesio Taping allows you to move in a completely natural way. While you engage in sports or work, your body naturally works on recovery.
Physiological Effects of Kinesio Taping
Kinesio Taping can be used in all stages of healing (acute, subacute, rehabilitation, and preventive). There are five key physiological effects of Kinesio Taping: • Skin: Kinesio Taping stimulates the skin’s mechanoreceptors, reduces inflammation, and helps with pain relief. • Circulation / Lymphatic System: Kinesio Taping lifts the skin, creating “wrinkles” in the skin that allow lymph fluid to move more easily from “high-pressure areas” to “low-pressure areas,” reducing pain. The application of the tape also increases interstitial lymphatic flow, improves fluid exchange between tissue layers, reduces edema, and evens out tissue temperature. • Fascia: In the case of an injury, collagen thickens, acting as a kind of glue that binds tissues together.
Muscles: Kinesio Taping can be used to relax or activate muscles. It can also improve range of motion, reduce pain, normalize muscle length, and reduce muscle fatigue.
Improvements
Kinesio Taping can contribute to improving the body’s biomechanics. It can support ligaments and tendons and enhance body awareness.
