Geriatic physiotherapy

Geriatric physiotherapy focuses on the health and well-being of older adults. Vulnerable seniors often benefit from the assistance of a physiotherapist to improve health, self-reliance, quality of life, participation in society, and daily functions and activities. The goal of the geriatric physiotherapist is also to prevent health and mobility issues and reduce the risks of vulnerability associated with aging.

Movement is life

When you experience difficulties with movement, you become aware that movement is a crucial part of our lives. To live healthily, vitally, and resiliently, you must stay active. For older adults, staying active is even more crucial as bodily functions decline more rapidly in those who are sedentary. People adapt easily, and this applies to those who move as well. If you can stand up from a chair without using your hands, take the stairs, and engage in daily walking and/or cycling, your body is more likely to remain healthy and fit. Even when complaints or illnesses arise, people will adapt to keep moving. After all, without movement, there is no life. The body and mind require movement. Movement influences our health and directly impacts how we physically and cognitively age. Movement is at the core of geriatric physiotherapy, and our treatments primarily focus on this aspect. In addition to individual physiotherapy by a therapist specializing in older adults, vulnerable seniors, and geriatric patients, we also offer Medically Supervised Exercise. Medically Supervised Exercise involves training under guidance and with medical approval, aiming to restore, promote, or maintain health.

Fall Prevention Preventing

Falls in older adults can prevent numerous issues. As you age, your muscle strength and reaction time decrease, increasing the risk of falls. Many falls can be prevented through advice and training. We use exercise therapy to improve balance, strength, coordination, gait patterns, and fitness, as well as to reduce the fear of movement, inactivity, muscle loss, and the risk of falling. Our treatment plan includes various options, such as exercises in our well-equipped practice rooms, home exercises, Pilates exercises, flywheel training, and/or Medically Supervised Exercise. Additionally, we can conduct a fall risk analysis to determine the risk of falling and provide additional advice based on the results.

Our physiotherapists specialize in movement and training. Within SMC Rijnland, there are several options for movement and training. You can engage in Medically Supervised Exercise, Pilates exercises, and train using our innovative Flywheel equipment. All three are effective for training muscle strength, balance, and agility, reducing the risk of falls. We will determine what is best for your situation.
